Keep Your RV Clean, Protected, and Ready for Travel

Regular washing, finish-specific protection, and seal inspections help keep your RV’s exterior in good condition. Start by identifying the materials on your RV, then use compatible products and follow their maintenance instructions. Paint, graphics, plastic components, and roof membranes do not all need the same treatment.

Why does exterior maintenance matter?

Routine care helps you:

  • Remove damaging buildup: Road grime, salt, bird droppings, and tree sap should not remain on exterior surfaces.
  • Spot potential leaks: Inspections can reveal deteriorating sealant before water intrusion becomes a larger problem.
  • Preserve appearance: Appropriate cleaning and protection help maintain finishes and graphics.
  • Identify repairs early: Washing provides an opportunity to notice loose trim, damaged components, or other changes.

How should you wash your RV?

  • Choose a compatible cleaner: “RV-safe” does not necessarily mean suitable for every surface. Check requirements for your paint, graphics, and roof.
  • Work from the top down: Rinse away loose dirt before washing, then clean manageable sections.
  • Use appropriate tools: Soft washing tools may suit conventional finishes, while matte paint requires a clean microfiber wash mitt.
  • Rinse thoroughly: Avoid allowing cleaning products to dry on the surface.
  • Dry gently: Use clean microfiber towels where appropriate to reduce water spots.

Avoid high-pressure washers, rotating brushes, and aggressive scrubbing that can damage finishes, graphics, or sealants.

Does every RV surface need wax or UV protectant?

No. The right product and application schedule depend on the material and finish.

  • Gloss paint, fiberglass, and gel coat: Use only approved waxes or protective products, following the applicable care instructions.
  • Plastic components: Confirm compatibility before applying a protectant to fender skirts, vents, or trim.
  • Graphics: Check product guidance rather than assuming a wax approved for the surrounding surface is also suitable for vinyl.
  • Matte paint: Do not apply conventional wax or polish, which can alter its appearance.

Avoid using one product across the entire RV unless it is approved for every surface involved.

What should you look for when inspecting seals?

Examine roof and sidewall sealant around windows, doors, seams, and exterior attachments. Look for:

  • Cracks or gaps
  • Shrinkage or separation
  • Loose or deteriorating material
  • Signs of water entry inside the RV

Sealant repairs and rubber-seal conditioning are different tasks. Use the product intended for the specific component, and follow preparation and curing instructions. A general-purpose sealant may not adhere correctly or be compatible with your roof membrane.

If you are unsure how to assess or repair an area, contact your dealer.

How do you care for graphics and matte finishes?

Clean graphics gently with compatible products and soft materials. Avoid abrasive cleaners and solvents that could damage the vinyl.

For matte paint:

  • Use matte-specific soap without wax or gloss enhancers.
  • Wash with a clean microfiber mitt.
  • Avoid polishing, buffing, and conventional wax.
  • Use only protective products approved for matte finishes.
  • Check that roof-cleaning runoff is compatible with the sidewalls and rinse it away promptly.

How should you maintain your RV roof?

Use a non-abrasive cleaner approved for the installed roof material. Clean as directed, with additional attention when debris collects beneath trees.

Inspect roof seams, joints, and attachments at least every 90 days, checking around vents, skylights, and air-conditioning equipment. Repair deteriorated sealant as needed using compatible materials. Keystone RV
