Protecting Your RV This Spring

Preparing your RV for spring rain starts with inspecting exterior seals, clearing drainage paths, checking plumbing, and managing indoor moisture. These checks can help you identify problems before your next trip. Follow your Owner’s Manual for maintenance intervals, approved materials, and safe access procedures.

Inspect Roof and Exterior Seals

Examine accessible seams and sealed joints around roof edges, vents, skylights, windows, doors, and slide-outs. Look for cracks, gaps, separation, or deteriorated sealant.

Access the roof only if your RV’s instructions permit it and you can do so safely. Arrange professional help for areas you cannot inspect safely.

Use compatible repair products rather than applying general-purpose caulk over a problem.

Clear Gutters and Check the Awning

Remove accessible leaves and debris from gutters and drainage paths. Check the awning’s fabric, arms, and mounting points for damage.

Retract the awning before heavy rain, increasing wind, or leaving the campsite. Use adjustable pitch only as directed by its manufacturer.

Review awning operation and care.

Check Plumbing for Leaks

Plumbing leaks need attention independently of the weather. During spring startup, inspect accessible hoses, fittings, and connections around sinks, the toilet, pump, and water heater.

Look for dripping, damp surfaces, staining, or unexpected pump cycling. Shut off the water supply and pump before addressing a leak.

Review holding-tank use and maintenance.

Manage Interior Condensation

Moisture can also collect inside when temperature and humidity conditions cause condensation.

Use appropriate ventilation during cooking and showers, maintain airflow around stored belongings, and check windows and enclosed spaces for dampness. Investigate persistent moisture rather than assuming it is condensation.

Inspect Storage Compartments

Check that compartment seals are intact and doors latch securely. Look inside for water stains, damp flooring, or musty odors.

Water-resistant bins can help protect belongings, but they do not replace repairing a leaking compartment. Keep required vents and drains clear, and recheck suspect areas after rain.
