How to Safely Supply Propane to Your RV Appliances

Welcome back to our First Time Camper Series! In this guide, we’ll show you how to safely supply propane to your RV appliances so that you’re prepared for a comfortable camping experience.

Pre-Check: Water Heater Filled and Ready

Before beginning, it’s essential to ensure that your water heater has water in it. Refer to the previous installment for tips on filling the freshwater system, including the water heater. Remember: never start the water heater without water in the tank, as this can cause serious damage. You can check that the tank is full by releasing a small amount of water from the Pressure Temperature Relief valve. If water is present, your tank is full and ready.

Step 1: Turning on the Propane

1. Open Propane Valves Slowly: It’s crucial to open the propane valves slowly and fully to avoid triggering a safety lock in the LP system, particularly on split bottle systems.
2. Open Both Bottles: If your RV has two propane bottles, open both.
3. Automatic Gas Regulator: The automatic gas regulator has a lever that points toward the bottle currently in use. If you see a red flag in the inspection glass, it indicates the current bottle is empty. Simply turn the lever toward the other bottle to switch and remove the empty bottle for refilling.

Step 2: Activating Your Appliances

With propane supplied to the RV, you can now turn on your appliances:

• Water Heater: Go inside your RV and turn on the water heater. It will now start heating water for your use.
• Furnace: If you need heat, turn on the furnace.
• Refrigerator: If your RV is equipped with a propane-powered fridge, make sure it’s set to “Auto” and turned on.
