Keep your RV slide-outs clean, remove roof debris before retracting them, and inspect seals, sealants, and exposed surfaces regularly. These checks help you spot damage and address potential water-entry points before they become larger problems.
Twigs, leaves, and pine needles can interfere with sweep seals and allow water to enter. Use a small broom or soft brush to remove debris, particularly before retracting the slide-out.
While cleaning, check for:
Use safe access methods rather than standing on the slide-out roof. Small membrane punctures may be repairable with a compatible patch system; ask your dealer if you are unsure which repair materials to use.
Inspect the rubber sweeps around the slide-out box. Keep them clean and free of debris, and check for tears, cracks, or other damage. Arrange replacement of damaged sweeps to help prevent water intrusion.
Avoid applying lubricants to the sweeps unless the component manufacturer specifically approves them. Products that leave residue can collect dirt. Follow separate manufacturer instructions for any lubrication required by the slide-out mechanism.
Sweep seals are not squeegees, so some surface water may remain after rain. Wipe up residual moisture with a towel. Persistent water entry or wet interior surfaces need further inspection.
Check sealant around corner moldings, windows, and other joined components for cracks, gaps, shrinkage, or separation.
Repair deteriorated areas using materials compatible with the surface and existing sealing system. Follow the sealant manufacturer’s preparation and curing instructions, and allow repairs to cure before washing.
Inspect window seals at the same time, paying attention to signs of moisture inside the RV.
Inspect accessible underside surfaces and hardware for:
Keep clear of moving components and disable slide-out power according to the system’s instructions before working on or underneath it. Have your dealer assess damaged hardware or components that need adjustment.
Use cleaning products approved for your RV’s surfaces. A clear, warm day allows cleaned areas to dry more easily.
Avoid power washers, which can damage sealants and graphics. During extended stays, check more often for debris collecting on top of and around the slide-out, especially beneath trees.
For model-specific care requirements, review the Care and Maintenance section of your Keystone Owner’s Manual.
Add a slide-out inspection to your regular RV maintenance routine.
