Replace a damaged RV compartment door seal by removing the old material, cleaning the mounting surface, and fitting a compatible replacement without stretching it. For the continuous seal described here, position the joint at the bottom and check for even contact when the door closes. A properly fitted seal helps keep water and debris out of the compartment.
Inspect the existing seal for cracks, tears, loose sections, or areas that no longer compress against the door.
Choose a replacement that matches the original seal’s shape, dimensions, and attachment method. A seal that is too thick can make the door difficult to latch, while one that is too thin may leave gaps.
These instructions cover an adhesive-backed seal. Clip-on seals and other designs may require different installation methods.
Important: Alcohol and adhesion promoter serve different purposes. Alcohol is used for cleaning where appropriate; adhesion promoter is a separate surface treatment. Do not substitute one for the other.
Open and secure the compartment door. Note the seal’s position and orientation before carefully peeling it away.
Use compatible adhesive remover as needed to release stubborn sections. Avoid pulling hard enough to damage the door or frame.
Inspect the exposed mounting area. If you find damage, corrosion, or signs of water intrusion, address the underlying problem before installing the replacement.
Remove old adhesive and seal residue using the approved cleaner. Follow with isopropyl alcohol if recommended for the surface and adhesive system, then allow the area to dry completely.
Apply adhesion promoter only if the replacement seal’s instructions call for it. Follow the specified application and drying times.
The mounting surface should be clean, dry, and free of residue before installation.
Begin at the bottom of the sealing perimeter so the finished joint remains at the bottom rather than along the top edge, where water may collect against it.
Peel back a short section of adhesive liner and press the seal into its original mounting position. Continue around the perimeter, removing the liner gradually.
Press the seal firmly into place and follow any adhesive bonding instructions before closing the door.
Close and latch the compartment door normally. It should close securely without excessive force.
Use a flashlight to help inspect the perimeter for visible gaps. Where accessible, shining light from one side while checking the other can reveal openings. Never climb into or close yourself inside a compartment to perform this check.
Reopen the door and inspect for folded sections, displaced corners, or uneven contact. A light check can reveal gaps, but it does not by itself confirm a watertight seal.
If gaps remain despite correct seal placement, have the hinges, latch, and door alignment checked rather than forcing the door shut.
Inspect your compartment door seals regularly and replace damaged sections before your next trip.
