How to Replace Your RV’s LED Awning Light Strip


Replacing an RV LED awning light strip involves removing the old strip, fitting a compatible replacement, reconnecting the wiring, and sealing any disturbed wall openings. Disconnect power before handling wires, cut the replacement only where its manufacturer permits, and verify the electrical connections before testing.

What Should You Check Before Replacing the Light Strip?

If the entire strip has stopped working, check the light switch, applicable fuse, and accessible connections before assuming the strip needs replacement. Disconnect power before handling any wiring.

When ordering a replacement, confirm its voltage, mounting style, length, and compatibility with any existing controller. These instructions apply to a strip that slides into a track; adhesive-mounted strips and other designs may require a different procedure.

What Tools and Materials Do You Need?

Gather the following before starting:

  • Compatible replacement LED light strip
  • Screw gun or screwdriver with a #2 square bit
  • Shop towels and protective gloves
  • Putty knife
  • Cleaner or adhesive remover compatible with the mounting surface
  • Caulk gun and compatible exterior RV sealant
  • Wire cutters and strippers
  • Properly sized connectors and the crimping tool specified for them
  • Measuring tape and scissors, if trimming is permitted
  • Stable ladder suitable for the working height

Important: Extend the awning as directed for access, then turn off and isolate power to the light circuit before removing covers or cutting wires. Keep others from operating the awning while you work, and avoid working in windy conditions.

How Do You Replace an RV LED Awning Light Strip?

Step 1: Remove the Existing Light Strip

  • Expose the Connections: Remove the appropriate awning hardware cover to access the wiring.
  • Record the Wiring: Take a photo and label the connections before disconnecting anything.
  • Disconnect the Strip: Unplug its connector if equipped. If it is hardwired, confirm power is off, then cut near the old strip while preserving enough RV-side wire for reconnection.
  • Release the Strip: Carefully remove sealant or adhesive holding it in the track without damaging the awning fabric, wiring, or mounting surface.
  • Slide It Out: Gently withdraw the old strip. Clean away residue as needed using products approved for the surface.

Step 2: Prepare the Replacement Strip

  • Confirm the Length: Compare the replacement with the old strip and the available track length.
  • Trim Only if Permitted: If the replacement is designed to be shortened, measure from the wired end and cut only at a designated cut mark. Follow any instructions for sealing the cut end.
  • Check Operation: If the manufacturer recommends testing before installation, use its specified power source and procedure. Do not assume a 9-volt battery is an appropriate test source for every strip.
  • Disconnect After Testing: Keep the strip unpowered while fitting it and making connections.

Step 3: Install and Connect the New Strip

  • Slide It Into Place: Feed the strip into the track in the orientation specified by the manufacturer, keeping the wire leads at the connection end. Do not force or sharply bend it.
  • Prepare the Wires: Strip insulation to the length required by the connectors rather than using one measurement for every connector type.
  • Make the Connections: Match positive and negative connections using the wiring diagram and your reference photo. Wire colors may differ between replacement products.
  • Secure the Wiring: Use properly sized connectors and the specified crimping tool where required. Confirm that the wires are secure and no bare conductor is exposed.
  • Route Carefully: Return the wiring to its intended location without pinching it or interfering with moving awning parts.

Step 4: Reseal and Reattach the Cover

  • Seal Disturbed Openings: Restore the seal around any wall penetration disturbed during removal using compatible exterior RV sealant.
  • Secure the Strip: Replace any end retention or sealing required by the light manufacturer.
  • Reinstall the Cover: Reattach the awning hardware cover without trapping wires. Follow the sealant’s curing instructions.

Step 5: Restore Power and Test

  • Turn On the Light: Restore power and check that the replacement illuminates along its intended length.
  • Check the Controls: Verify any supported dimming or color functions.
  • Address Problems: If the strip does not work correctly, disconnect power before checking connections. Contact your dealer if the cause is unclear.
  • Check Clearance: Remove tools and the ladder from the awning’s path before operating it. Confirm that the installation does not interfere with normal movement.
