Replacing RV slide-out fascia involves removing the decorative molding, preparing the backing, and cutting and securing replacement pieces to fit. Whether you’re repairing damage or updating the interior, careful measurements and the correct fasteners help produce a clean finish without interfering with slide-out operation.
Molding profiles and attachment methods vary by RV. Inspect your existing installation before starting and confirm that the replacement materials fit your slide-out.
Gather the following:
Choose fasteners based on the replacement trim and available backing. Do not assume longer nails or screws will provide a better repair.
Park the RV on stable, level ground and position the slide-out for access according to its operating instructions. Keep others from operating it while work is underway.
Photograph the fascia before removing anything. Capture the corners, joints, trim covers, and decorative blocks so you can reproduce their arrangement.
Check how each piece attaches. Some installations use brad nails, while others include screws or concealed fasteners. Support long or overhead pieces during removal, using a helper when needed.
Remove any covers or decorative blocks that conceal the main molding’s fasteners.
Back out accessible screws, then gently work a putty knife or small pry bar behind nailed trim. Protect adjacent wall finishes and work gradually along the piece rather than pulling hard from one end.
If the molding resists, check for another fastener before applying more force.
Label each removed piece with its location and orientation. Record its length and any angled cuts. Save intact pieces as templates, but confirm their measurements against the opening before cutting replacements.
Remove remaining brad nails, screws, and loose material from the mounting surface. Use pliers or a nail puller carefully to avoid damaging the backing.
The backer board should be sound and ready to hold the new fasteners. If you find soft material, moisture damage, or loose backing, address that problem before covering it with new fascia.
Check the mounting area and confirm where fasteners can safely penetrate. Keep them clear of slide seals, moving components, and concealed wiring.
Measure each mounting location and mark the replacement pieces clearly.
Account for the original joint arrangement, including overlaps, mitered corners, and areas concealed by decorative blocks. A different molding profile may require different cuts.
Support the material securely while cutting and follow the saw manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Dry-fit every piece before fastening it. Check that:
Make adjustments during this stage rather than trying to pull poorly fitting pieces together with fasteners.
Position the main molding against the backer board and hold it securely while fastening.
Use the attachment method appropriate for your installation. If using a pneumatic brad nailer, follow its instructions and keep hands clear of the firing area. Disconnect the air supply before clearing jams or making adjustments.
Fasteners should secure the molding without breaking through its face or extending into areas behind the backing. Avoid overtightening screws or driving brads too deeply.
Install the remaining fascia pieces, checking alignment as you go.
Reinstall trim covers, corner blocks, and center blocks in the documented arrangement.
Check their fit before fastening. These pieces should conceal the intended joints or hardware without forcing the main molding out of position.
Fill visible nail holes with color-matched putty suitable for the molding’s finish. Follow the product instructions and wipe away excess without smearing it into textured surfaces.
Remove tools, loose fasteners, and debris from the slide-out area.
Once the work is complete, operate the slide-out according to its instructions and check the new trim for clearance. Stop immediately if it catches, binds, or contacts another surface.
