Replacing your Coleman RV air conditioner’s filter involves lowering the interior cover, removing the old filter, and securing a compatible replacement in the correct airflow direction. Keystone Master Technicians Matt and Bart recommend replacing the disposable filter shown in their demonstration at least annually, with more frequent inspections when camping in dusty conditions or traveling with pets.
This guide covers the ceiling assembly with thumbscrews and filter holders shown in the demonstration. Check your Coleman-Mach instructions before starting, since cover designs and filter requirements vary.
The filter captures airborne particles as air circulates through the AC system. As debris accumulates, it can restrict airflow, making regular inspection an important part of AC maintenance.
Some Coleman-Mach replacement filters carry a MERV 9 rating. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and describes a filter’s particle-capture performance. Confirm the rating and compatibility of the specific replacement you purchase rather than assuming every Coleman filter is the same.
Gather these items before starting:
Match the replacement’s dimensions and type to the existing filter and equipment instructions. A higher filtration rating alone does not establish compatibility.
Turn the AC and its fan off before removing the cover. Follow the equipment’s power-isolation instructions, and position your ladder on a firm, level surface.
Locate the thumbscrews securing the interior AC cover.
Support the cover with one hand while loosening the screws so it does not drop unexpectedly. Keep any removable hardware together for reinstallation.
Carefully lower the cover to expose the filter.
Before removing anything, note how the filter sits in the housing and how the retaining holders secure it. A quick photo can help during reassembly.
Move the holders aside as required, then remove the old filter carefully to limit loose dust falling into the RV.
Wipe dust from the accessible cover without pushing debris farther into the AC assembly.
Look for an airflow arrow on the replacement filter’s frame.
The arrow should point in the direction air travels through the return opening toward the AC unit. In the ceiling assembly shown in the demonstration, that direction is upward into the unit.
Follow the filter and ceiling-assembly instructions if their markings differ. Do not rely on the appearance or color of the filter material to determine orientation.
Place the replacement filter into its designated position without bending or forcing it.
Move the holders back into place and check that:
Raise the cover into position and tighten the thumbscrews securely by hand. Avoid overtightening, which can damage the cover or fasteners.
Once everything is reassembled, restore power as directed and run the AC fan. Check for normal airflow and listen for rattling that could indicate a loose cover.
Do not wait for the annual replacement date if the filter becomes visibly dirty or damaged. Inspect it more frequently during heavy AC use, dusty trips, or travel with pets.
Also confirm whether your system uses a disposable or washable filter. Some Coleman-Mach assemblies use reusable foam filters; follow their cleaning instructions rather than applying the disposable-filter procedure.
