Replacing interior RV wall seam tape involves carefully removing the old strip, cleaning and drying the wall surface, and applying matching tape centered over the panel joint. The key is to work slowly during removal so you do not lift or tear the decorative vinyl covering on the wall.
This guide covers decorative interior wall seam tape. Roof seam tape and exterior sealing products require different materials and repair procedures.
Gather these items before starting:
Match the replacement tape’s width, color, and pattern to the existing wall. Keep sharp blades away from the panel surface whenever possible.
Check the seam and surrounding wall for staining, softness, bubbling, or dampness.
If you find signs of moisture damage, identify and correct the cause before applying new tape. Decorative seam tape does not repair a leak or damaged wall panel.
Take note of how the existing tape meets the ceiling and floor trim. This will help you match the original appearance.
If the tape extends beneath trim, carefully separate it at the trim edge. Use light pressure and avoid cutting into the wall covering or molding.
Lift a loose edge of the tape and begin peeling slowly. If you need the knife to start an edge, keep the blade shallow and avoid slipping it beneath the panel’s decorative vinyl layer.
Pull steadily along the seam without twisting or tugging sideways. Support the surrounding wall covering as needed and stop if it begins lifting with the tape.
Remove the strip gradually rather than trying to pull it off in one motion.
Remove loose debris and check for adhesive residue.
Use a soft cloth and a cleaning method approved for the wall covering. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, or soaking the seam. Test any approved cleaner in an inconspicuous area first.
Allow the surface to dry completely before installing the replacement tape. Follow the tape manufacturer’s surface-preparation instructions if provided.
Measure the full length of the seam, including any portion that will tuck beneath the trim.
Cut the replacement tape a few inches longer than needed to leave room for final adjustments. Use scissors to make this initial cut away from the wall.
Before removing the backing, hold the strip against the seam to confirm its width, length, and appearance.
Peel back a small section of the adhesive liner at the top of the strip.
Center the tape over the panel joint and lightly position the upper end. If the existing trim allows it, tuck the end beneath the molding without forcing or damaging either material.
Continue down the wall, removing the backing a little at a time. Keep the tape centered and smooth it as you go.
Avoid stretching the tape or pressing the entire strip into place before checking alignment. Once positioned correctly, apply firm, even pressure along its full length, following the product instructions.
Trim the excess at the top and bottom for a neat fit.
Where possible, cut the loose excess away from the wall. If trimming in place is necessary, use minimal blade pressure and protect the wall finish beneath the tape.
Check the full strip for lifted edges, wrinkles, or areas that have not bonded. Follow any specified adhesive-setting time before cleaning the repaired area.
