Replace loose, missing, or shrunken RV flexible insert trim by removing the old strip, cleaning the molding track, and fitting a compatible replacement. Seat both edges fully without stretching the material, then secure the ends using the method specified for your installation. This repair replaces the flexible screw-cover insert, not the underlying molding or its seals.
Flexible insert trim fits into a channel in the exterior molding and covers the mounting screws. Over time, it can shrink, crack, or pull loose from the track.
Choose a replacement that matches the original insert’s width and profile. An incorrect size may be difficult to install or fail to stay seated.
Park on stable ground and use a suitable ladder if needed. Avoid overreaching, and arrange service if you cannot safely access the trim.
Check how the ends are secured before pulling out the strip. Remove any end-retaining screws or carefully release sealant holding the insert in place.
Use the putty bone to lift one edge out of the channel, then gently work the old insert free along its length. Avoid scratching the sidewall or bending the molding.
Do not remove the molding’s mounting screws simply to replace the flexible insert.
Remove dirt, loose fragments, and residue from the channel using a compatible cleaner and non-marring tool. Let the area dry.
Inspect the exposed molding and screws. Loose molding, damaged fasteners, or deteriorated sealant may require a separate repair before installing the new insert. Covering those problems with fresh trim will not correct them.
Measure the full section to be replaced. If the original insert has shrunk, do not use its shortened length as your only measurement.
Prepare enough replacement material to cover the entire section and accommodate the specified end treatment. Leave final trimming until the insert is seated.
Starting at one end, tuck one edge of the flexible insert into the molding channel. Gently flex the strip and guide the opposite edge into place with the putty bone.
Work along the track in short sections:
Check the fit as you go so you can correct a loose edge before continuing.
Trim the insert to its final length according to the replacement instructions. Restore the original end-retaining method where appropriate, using specified hardware or compatible sealant.
Do not add new screws through the molding or sidewall without confirming the correct installation method. Keep any designed drainage openings clear.
Inspect the finished section to confirm that both edges remain seated, the ends are secure, and no gaps expose the screw channel.
Check flexible insert trim during routine exterior inspections and replace damaged sections promptly.
