Replacing an RV interior doorknob involves removing the old knob and latch, installing a compatible replacement, and checking that everything operates smoothly. For the screw-mounted style described here, you need only a Phillips screwdriver and the replacement assembly. Keep the door open until you have confirmed that the new knob retracts the latch and the lock works correctly.
Confirm that the replacement fits your door’s thickness, existing openings, and latch position. Choose the appropriate function, such as a passage knob or a privacy knob with a lock.
These instructions cover a direct replacement using the existing openings. If the hardware does not fit, check with your dealer before modifying the door.
Use the replacement manufacturer’s instructions if its design differs from the steps below.
With the door open, remove the screws securing the knob’s mounting plates. Support both sides of the knob, then separate them and pull them away from the door.
Remove the screws holding the latch faceplate at the edge of the door. Slide the latch, sometimes called the plunger assembly, out of its opening.
Inspect the openings and mounting area for damage before installing the replacement.
Insert the new latch into the opening at the edge of the door. For a standard beveled latch, the sloped face should meet the strike plate as the door closes.
Align the faceplate and install its screws as directed. It should sit properly against the door edge without being forced into place.
Position the knob halves and mounting plates on opposite sides of the door. Align the spindle with the latch mechanism according to the replacement instructions.
If installing a privacy knob, place the locking control on the intended room side.
Hand-start the mounting screws, then tighten them evenly until the assembly is secure. Avoid overtightening, which can cause binding or damage the door.
While the door remains open:
Once these checks pass, gently close the door and verify that the latch engages the strike plate. Open and close it several times without forcing or slamming it.
If the knob binds or the door will not latch, recheck alignment and installation before use.
