Replacing an RV fender skirt involves releasing any sealant, removing the mounting screws, and fitting a compatible replacement to the existing mounting points. Support the skirt during removal and installation, avoid overtightening screws, and restore any specified seals and lower supports. These steps cover a direct replacement; mounting details can vary by model.
Confirm that the replacement matches the original skirt’s dimensions, shape, mounting locations, and support arrangement. Do not rely on appearance alone when ordering.
If the damage followed a tire failure or impact, inspect the surrounding wheel-well area and supports before covering them with a new skirt. Have damaged mounting points or nearby components evaluated first.
Park securely on level ground, keep the RV from moving, and allow tires and nearby components to cool before working.
The original procedure lists a ⅛-inch drill bit, but the correct hole size depends on the replacement material and fasteners. Follow the skirt manufacturer’s instructions.
If the skirt is sealed to the RV, carefully score the sealant along the joint. Keep the blade away from the sidewall finish, wiring, and other components.
Remove the outer mounting screws, working toward the center. Leave one center screw in place temporarily while removing any lower support screws.
Support the skirt with your free hand or have a helper hold it. Remove the final center screw and gently lift the skirt away without pulling against the sidewall.
Remove old sealant and residue using a cleaner approved for the surrounding materials. Avoid scratching the finish or damaging the mounting flange.
Inspect for:
Let the cleaned surface dry. Correct damaged mounting points before proceeding; tightening a screw harder will not repair a stripped hole.
Hold the new skirt in position and check its fit against the existing mounting locations.
If holes are required, mark them carefully and drill the replacement skirt according to its instructions. Where practical, remove it from the RV before drilling so the bit cannot contact the sidewall or components behind it.
Do not add new holes in the RV or force a poorly fitting skirt into position without confirming the correct installation method.
Position the skirt and hand-start a center mounting screw. Continue installing screws from the center outward, keeping the skirt evenly aligned.
Tighten gradually until secure. Avoid distorting or cracking the skirt, stripping the mounting holes, or driving screws too deeply.
Reattach the lower support screws and brackets, if equipped. Confirm that the supports hold the skirt in its intended position without pulling it out of shape.
If the original installation uses a sealed joint, restore it using the specified sealant and application method. Use RV-grade silicone only where it is approved for the skirt, adjoining surface, and existing sealant.
Follow the product’s curing instructions and keep any designed drainage openings clear.
Check that the skirt and supports are secure, the edges sit correctly, and nothing contacts the tires or moving components. Do not travel with a loose skirt or unresolved clearance concern.
Inspect fender skirt fasteners and supports during routine exterior maintenance.
