To replace an RV cabinet door handle, remove the mounting screws, align a compatible replacement with the existing holes and tighten the hardware without overtightening. Finish by checking that the handle is secure and the cabinet opens, closes and latches properly. In this guide, Bart and Tori walk through a straightforward repair you can complete with a screwdriver and the correct replacement hardware.
Gather the following before starting:
A hand screwdriver gives you control when tightening small cabinet hardware. Use the correct bit to avoid damaging the screw heads.
For a two-screw handle, measure the distance from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the other. Match that spacing when choosing the replacement.
Check that the handle’s shape and projection provide clearance from nearby doors, drawers and trim. Confirm that the screws are appropriate for the cabinet door thickness and the replacement handle.
A screw that is too short may not engage securely. One that is too long may bottom out before the handle is tight. Use the manufacturer’s specified hardware rather than assuming the original screws will fit.
Open the cabinet door to access the mounting screws, typically located on the inside face.
Support the handle with one hand while loosening the screws with the other. Remove the screws and lift the handle away from the door.
Keep the hardware together, then inspect the mounting area. Look for cracked material, enlarged holes or damage that could prevent the new handle from sitting securely.
If the door is damaged, address that issue before installing the replacement.
Position the new handle over the existing holes.
Insert the mounting screws from the inside of the cabinet door and start them by hand. For a two-screw handle, engage both screws before tightening either one fully.
Tighten gradually, alternating between screws so the handle seats evenly against the door. Stop when it is secure.
Do not force a screw that will not engage smoothly or continue tightening if the handle remains loose. Recheck alignment and hardware compatibility. Overtightening can damage the threads, handle or cabinet surface.
Gently pull and move the handle to check for wobbling. It should sit firmly without shifting.
Open and close the cabinet door several times. Confirm that:
A replacement handle does not repair a faulty cabinet latch. If the door will not stay closed, inspect the latch separately before traveling.
