How to Use Your RV Camp Kitchen Safely

To use your RV camp kitchen effectively, provide the refrigerator’s required ventilation, know where the sink drains, and use correctly sized cookware on the cooktop. Features vary by model, so check the instructions for your installed equipment before use.

How do you keep the camp kitchen refrigerator cold?

The mini refrigerator needs airflow to release heat. For installations that require the exterior compartment door to remain open during operation, keep it open so air can circulate. This means the camp kitchen compartment door, not the refrigerator door.

Before stocking the refrigerator:

  • Turn it on several hours ahead of use.
  • Allow it to reach the appropriate storage temperature.
  • Keep its ventilation openings clear.

When finished using it, remove food and drinks, switch it off, defrost any frozen areas, and wipe the interior dry before storage. Follow the refrigerator’s instructions for shutdown and ventilation requirements.

Where does the outdoor sink drain?

Check your sink’s plumbing before running water. Depending on the installation, it may drain into a gray or black holding tank, use a removable container, or require another arrangement.

If the sink connects to a holding tank:

  • Identify which tank receives the water.
  • Monitor that tank’s level during use.
  • Conserve water when dry camping to preserve both fresh water and wastewater capacity.

If the sink uses a removable container or has no connected drain, understand how water must be collected and emptied before turning on the faucet. Stay nearby while water is running.

What cookware should you use on the outdoor cooktop?

Choose pans that fit within the cooking surface and meet the cooktop manufacturer’s size requirements.

  • Do not use oversized cookware that extends beyond the permitted cooking area.
  • Do not place a pan across two operating burners. Excessive heat buildup can damage the grates, burners, and cooktop.
  • Never leave the cooktop unattended while cooking.
  • Let the cooktop cool completely before sliding it into storage or closing the compartment.

Follow the appliance’s warning labels and operating instructions, including required clearances from nearby surfaces.

What should you check before closing the camp kitchen?

Before storing the kitchen or preparing for travel:

  • Turn off the cooking equipment and allow it to cool.
  • Shut off the faucet and empty any removable wastewater container.
  • Clean and dry the sink and work surfaces.
  • Secure cookware and other loose items.
  • Confirm the refrigerator is set for the intended operating or storage condition.
  • Secure slides, latches, and the compartment door.

Check your camp kitchen’s appliance instructions before your next outdoor meal.
