Reduce RV condensation by venting humid air outdoors, improving airflow, drying wet surfaces, and using a dehumidifier when needed. Cooking, showering, breathing, and damp belongings add moisture to a small living space. Controlling that moisture and repairing leaks promptly helps protect your RV and reduces the conditions that allow mold to grow.
Condensation occurs when moist air contacts a surface cold enough for water vapor to become liquid. Windows, metal frames, exterior walls, and enclosed storage areas are common places to find it.
An RV’s compact interior can accumulate humidity quickly, particularly when windows and vents remain closed. Moisture can also collect out of sight inside closets, behind furniture, or beneath stored belongings.
Condensation and leaks require different corrective action. Do not assume that a damp wall or ceiling is simply condensation, especially if it appears after rain or remains wet in one location.
Run the appropriate exhaust fan during moisture-producing activities. Use a kitchen fan that vents outdoors, and keep the bathroom door closed while showering with the bathroom vent operating.
Continue ventilation afterward as needed to remove lingering humidity. Follow the fan’s operating instructions and keep required ventilation openings clear.
Dry wet clothing, towels, and outdoor gear outside when practical and permitted. Avoid leaving damp items piled inside the RV.
Wipe water from shower surfaces and clean spills promptly. Check beneath mats and stored belongings where moisture may remain trapped.
Avoid packing cabinets and closets so tightly that air cannot move around their contents. Open interior storage doors periodically while parked to help air circulate, particularly along exterior walls.
Keep heating and cooling outlets unobstructed. Secure cabinet doors and belongings before travel.
Use ventilation even in cold weather rather than sealing the RV completely to retain heat. Bringing in drier outside air can help remove indoor moisture.
Heating alone does not remove moisture, but lowering the temperature is not a reliable solution either. Colder surfaces can encourage condensation. Combine appropriate heating with ventilation and humidity control.
In warm, humid weather, air conditioning can remove moisture while cooling. Opening windows may bring in more humidity, so adjust your approach to outdoor conditions.
A hygrometer helps you track indoor relative humidity. Aim to keep it below 60%, ideally around 30–50% when practical. Cold surfaces may still develop condensation, so adjust moisture control if you see water collecting.
If ventilation and air conditioning are insufficient, use a dehumidifier suitable for the space and operating temperature. Follow its electrical, clearance, and drainage instructions.
Mold prevention starts with keeping materials dry and correcting moisture sources.
Do not rely on a specific temperature range to determine whether mold can grow. Moisture control remains necessary across varying conditions.
Find and correct the moisture source before treating the affected area. Applying a mold-killing product alone does not resolve a leak or remove damaged material.
Use cleaning methods approved for the surface and follow product safety instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals.
Contact your dealer or a qualified remediation professional if growth is extensive, returns after cleaning, involves porous materials, or appears connected to hidden water damage. Soft walls, recurring stains, and persistent musty odors also warrant evaluation.
