Keep your RV’s matte finish looking its best by hand washing with matte-specific products, using clean microfiber tools, and protecting the surface with a compatible matte sealant or coating. Avoid traditional waxes, abrasive polishes, and harsh cleaners, which can damage the finish or leave permanent shiny spots.
Matte finishes require a different approach than glossy paint. The goal is to remove dirt gently while preserving the surface’s non-reflective appearance.
Before washing, check that every product is specifically suitable for matte paint. A cleaner or protectant intended for glossy vehicles may contain ingredients that change the finish’s appearance.
Gather:
Do not use dish detergent, bleach, household cleaners, or generic degreasers unless explicitly approved for the finish.
Apply a pre-wash cleaner or snow foam designed for matte finishes, following its instructions for dilution, application, and rinsing.
This step loosens debris before you touch the surface with a wash mitt, reducing the need to scrub.
Avoid trying to remove stubborn dirt with extra pressure. Use the appropriate matte-safe cleaning product and allow it to work as directed.
Use matte-specific shampoo and keep the surface lubricated with plenty of water or wash solution.
Gently wipe the panels with a clean microfiber mitt. Avoid brushes, sponges, and aggressive scrubbing.
If the mitt falls on the ground or becomes contaminated, replace it with a clean one. Dirt trapped in the fibers can scratch the finish.
Wash by hand rather than using an automatic vehicle wash.
After rinsing, dry the surface with clean microfiber towels using gentle contact.
Keep separate clean towels available so you do not spread dirt or residue across freshly washed panels. Avoid rubbing repeatedly at a mark that remains after washing; treat it separately with an approved matte-safe product.
Roof-cleaning products can run down the sides of your RV. Choose a cleaner approved for the roof material that is also safe for the matte finish wherever runoff may reach it.
Do not use dish soap or bleach on the roof of a matte-finish model. Rinsing the sidewalls afterward does not make an unsuitable cleaner safe to use.
Rinse runoff from the walls promptly, following the cleaning product’s directions.
Traditional waxes and gloss-enhancing products can change a matte surface’s appearance. Use only sealants or ceramic coatings specifically designed for matte paint.
Keystone’s care guidance recommends sealing the matte finish every six to nine months. Follow the selected product’s application, drying, and curing instructions; do not assume every matte protectant is applied the same way.
Confirm compatibility before applying a new coating over an existing protectant.
Address bird droppings, tree sap, and other contamination promptly using a matte-safe soap or detail spray.
Follow the product instructions and clean gently. If the contamination does not release, seek guidance before trying stronger chemicals or abrasive methods.
Avoid:
Polishing can create shiny areas that permanently alter the matte appearance. Scratches and uneven sheen need an assessment from a professional familiar with matte finishes rather than conventional paint correction.
