How to Install a Backup Camera in Your RV: Step-by-Step Guide

Many RVs come prepped for a backup camera, making installation straightforward and convenient. This guide will walk you through the steps to install your backup camera when your unit is equipped with the necessary prep.

Tools Required

Before you begin, gather the following tools:

• New backup camera
• Wire cutter
• Screws
• Electrical tape
• Drill with a Phillips bit

Installation Steps

Step 1: Safety First

To ensure safety during installation, remove power to the clearance lights by disconnecting the 7-way cord from the tow vehicle. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s installation instructions prior to proceeding.

Step 2: Access the Wires

Locate the wire clip/cover on the rear wall of your RV. It is secured with two screws and may have a sticker.

1. Remove the Screws: Use your drill to remove the two screws securing the clip.
2. Pull Out the Clip: Gently pull the clip out to access the wires behind it.

Step 3: Identify the Wires

Carefully pull the wires out of the wall far enough to work on them, and dispose of the clip.

• The green wire is the positive.
• The white wire is the negative.

Step 4: Prepare the Wires

1. Cut the Wires: Use your wire cutter to cut the positive and negative wires.
2. Strip the Insulation: Strip back ½” to ¾” of the insulating coating from each wire.

According to the manufacturer’s installation instructions, the camera prep wire typically has:

• Red wire for positive
• Black wire for negative

1. Connect the Positive Lead: Take the positive lead from the backup camera and twist it together with the green positive wire. Secure this connection with a wire nut.
2. Connect the Negative Lead: Similarly, twist the negative lead from the backup camera with the white negative wire and secure it with a wire nut.
3. Insulate Connections: Use electrical tape to secure and insulate the wire connections.

Step 6: Tuck the Wires Back

Carefully tuck the wires back into the wall, ensuring that they are positioned in a way that won't damage them when you install the camera.

Step 7: Install the Camera

1. Secure the Camera: Use the screws provided with the camera to secure it to the wall.
2. Check the Operation: Before sealing everything up, check the operation of the camera using the monitor to ensure it functions correctly.

Step 8: Seal and Finish

Once you have confirmed that the camera is working properly, finish the installation by sealing any openings to protect against moisture and debris.
