How to Replace Your RV Compartment Door Locks: Step-by-Step Guide


You can replace a basic RV compartment door cam lock by removing the rear locking arm and retaining nut, matching the replacement to the existing hardware, and installing the new assembly. The most important steps are choosing the correct fit and testing the lock with the door open before closing it.

This guide covers common screw-and-nut cam locks used on exterior storage doors. If your compartment uses a different latch assembly, follow its manufacturer’s instructions.

What tools and parts do you need?

Gather these items before starting:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Tape measure

  • Compatible replacement lock, locking arm, keys, and hardware

What are the parts of an RV compartment lock?

The lock body, or cylinder housing, passes through the compartment door. A retaining nut secures it from the inside.

The cam, also called the locking arm, attaches to the rear of the lock. Turning the key rotates this arm behind the compartment frame or keeper to hold the door closed.

Matching both the lock body and the arm matters. A replacement that fits through the door may still fail to latch if the arm has the wrong reach or offset.

How do you remove the old compartment lock?

Open the compartment door and secure it so it cannot fall or swing closed while you work. Take a photo of the rear assembly, including the arm’s position when unlocked.

  1. Remove the screw securing the locking arm to the back of the lock.
  2. Lift off the arm, keeping track of any washers or rotation-stop hardware.
  3. Hold the outside of the lock steady while loosening the retaining nut with an adjustable wrench.
  4. Remove the nut and carefully slide the lock body out through the front of the door.

Save the old assembly for comparison when ordering the replacement. Plan the repair so the storage compartment can be secured while you wait for parts.

What should you measure before ordering a replacement?

Use the replacement manufacturer’s measurement diagram to confirm the fit. Check:

  • Lock-body length: Match the usable mounting length to the door thickness and existing assembly.
  • Mounting opening: Confirm the replacement fits the opening’s size and shape.
  • Locking-arm reach: Match the distance needed for the arm to engage behind the frame or keeper.
  • Arm offset: Match any bend that positions the arm closer to or farther from the door.

How do you install the new compartment lock?

Follow the instructions supplied with the replacement hardware.

  1. Set the new lock to its unlocked position.
  2. Insert the body through the door opening, positioning any supplied gasket or washer as directed.
  3. Install the retaining nut. Tighten it securely without overtightening or distorting the door.
  4. Install any required washers or rotation-stop hardware in the specified order.
  5. Position the locking arm so it clears the frame when unlocked, then secure its mounting screw.

If the arm points in the wrong direction, check the installation instructions before repositioning it. Rotating the arm 180 degrees is not the correct adjustment for every lock.

How do you check that the lock works correctly?

With the compartment door still open, turn the key through the full locking and unlocking movement. Confirm that the arm moves freely and the lock body stays firmly in place.

Next, return the arm to the unlocked position and gently close the door. Lock and unlock it, checking that the arm engages the frame and releases without forcing the key.

If the door binds, will not latch, or remains loose when locked, reopen it and check the replacement’s fit and arm position before using the compartment.
