Replacing an RV entry door grab handle involves removing the old handle, cleaning the mounting area, restoring the base seal, and securing a compatible replacement. Remove the bottom screws first while supporting the handle, then install the replacement from the top down. Sound mounting points and proper sealing are essential for a secure installation that resists water intrusion.
Choose a replacement handle that matches the original mounting pattern and is approved for the installation. Confirm that the supplied hardware is appropriate for your RV’s mounting points.
These instructions cover a direct replacement using existing holes. If the new handle requires different mounting locations, have your dealer confirm the necessary backing and installation method before drilling.
Do not use a loose or damaged handle for support while entering or exiting the RV.
Gather the following:
Use the sealing material specified for your installation. Butyl tape, foam tape, and preformed gaskets are not automatically interchangeable.
Support the handle and remove the bottom retaining screws first. Leaving the upper screws in place initially helps prevent the handle from rotating against the sidewall.
Continue supporting the handle while removing the upper screws, then carefully separate it from the wall. If old sealant holds it in place, release it gently with a non-marring putty stick rather than pulling against the sidewall.
Remove the old gasket, tape, and sealant residue. Clean the surface with a compatible product and allow it to dry.
Inspect the mounting holes and surrounding wall for:
If the mounting area is damaged, stop and have it evaluated. Sealant does not restore the holding strength of a damaged screw hole.
Apply the same type of base sealing material used in the original installation, or the approved replacement specified by the manufacturer.
Position the handle over the existing holes and hand-start an upper screw first. Start the remaining screws by hand, working from top to bottom.
Tighten the screws gradually and evenly. The mounting bases should sit securely against the wall without cracking, distorting, or stripping the holes. Follow any tightening specification supplied with the handle.
Apply the specified secondary seal around the handle’s mounting bases where they meet the sidewall. Follow the sealant manufacturer’s preparation and curing instructions.
Check that the handle and mounting bases do not shift or pull away from the wall. If the handle folds, confirm that it moves and locks into its intended positions correctly.
Do not rely on the handle for support if the screws will not tighten securely or the mounting area moves. Have your dealer inspect the installation before use.
Check your entry grab handle for looseness and seal deterioration during routine RV maintenance.
