How to Adjust Roller Shades in Your RV: Stop and Speed Settings

You can adjust the upper stopping point and retraction speed of compatible RV roller shades using the adjustment wheels at the ends of the roller assembly. The clear wheel controls where the shade stops when raised, while the black wheel controls how quickly it retracts. Make small changes and test after each adjustment.

  • What Should You Check Before Adjusting Your Shades?

  • These instructions apply to manual roller shades with clear stop-adjustment wheels and black speed-adjustment wheels. Other designs may use different controls or adjustment directions.
  • On the style described here, viewed from inside the RV:
  • Right side: Clear stop-adjustment wheel
  • Left side: Black speed-adjustment wheel
  • Confirm the controls and turning directions for your specific shade before beginning. Clockwise and counterclockwise directions depend on which end of the assembly you are viewing.
  • Do You Need Tools or Have to Remove the Shade?

  • No special tools are needed for the adjustment-wheel style described here. Both settings can typically be changed while the shade remains installed.
  • Use a stable step stool if needed to reach the wheels comfortably. Avoid pulling on the shade assembly or surrounding trim for support.
  • How Do You Adjust the Shade’s Stopping Height?

  • The stop adjustment controls the shade’s upper resting position when it retracts. It does not set how far you pull the shade down.
  • Locate the Clear Wheel: Find the stop-adjustment wheel on the right side of the installed assembly.
  • Adjust the Stop: With the shade in its upper resting position, turn the wheel slightly in the direction specified by the shade manufacturer to raise or lower that position.
  • Test the Result: Pull the shade down partway, then allow it to retract using its normal release action.
  • Fine-Tune as Needed: Repeat in small increments until the shade stops at the desired height.
  • Do not force the adjustment wheel or allow the bottom rail to strike surrounding trim. If the stopping point moves in the wrong direction, reverse the small adjustment and check your shade’s instructions.
  • How Do You Adjust the Retraction Speed?

  • The speed adjustment controls how quickly the shade rolls up. It does not control the speed at which you manually pull it down.
  • For the black-wheel mechanism described here:
  • Locate the Black Wheel: Find the speed-adjustment wheel on the left side of the assembly.
  • Change the Speed: Turn the wheel clockwise to increase retraction speed or counterclockwise to decrease it, following the viewing direction in your manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Test the Shade: Lower it partway and release it normally. Check for smooth, controlled movement.
  • Repeat Gradually: Make small adjustments until the shade retracts reliably without snapping upward.
  • Adjust one setting at a time so you can judge the effect of each change.
  • What if the Shade Still Does Not Work Correctly?

  • Stop adjusting if the wheel will not turn normally, the shade retracts unevenly, or the mechanism does not respond. Do not force the shade beyond its normal travel or disassemble the spring mechanism to increase tension.
  • A damaged mechanism or mounting problem may require service rather than further adjustment. Contact your dealer if the shade continues to bind or fails to retract.
  • Check each shade’s stopping height and retraction speed before your next trip..
