Replacing an adhesive-mounted front cap LED light strip involves removing the old strip, preparing the mounting surface, connecting and testing the replacement, and sealing the wire opening and strip ends. A lasting repair depends on clean surfaces, secure electrical connections and materials compatible with your RV’s finish. This guide follows Keystone’s front cap LED replacement method; confirm that it applies to your light assembly before starting.
Gather your supplies before removing the existing strip:
Confirm the replacement strip’s voltage, dimensions, polarity and mounting requirements. Use your RV’s identification information when asking your dealer to verify the correct part.
Turn off the front cap lights, then isolate the lighting circuit using your RV’s electrical shutdown instructions. Account for battery power, shore power and any other source that could energize the circuit.
Do not rely on the light switch alone. Verify that power is off before cutting or stripping wires.
Position your ladder or platform on firm, level ground. Work within comfortable reach and move the platform as needed rather than stretching across the front cap.
If you are unsure how to isolate or test the circuit, have a qualified RV technician complete the electrical work.
Before removal, note the strip’s position and the location where its wires enter the cap. A photo can help you match the original alignment.
Gently peel the old light strip away from the mounting surface. Work slowly to avoid damaging the finish or pulling on the wiring.
If your lights use a lens, track or mounting arrangement different from the adhesive-mounted strip described here, follow that assembly’s removal instructions.
Avoid sharp metal tools that could scratch the cap. Stop if the finish begins lifting or the strip cannot be removed without damage.
Remove leftover adhesive using a product approved for your RV’s front cap finish. Follow the cleaner’s application instructions and test compatibility in an inconspicuous area when appropriate.
Wipe away residue with a clean rag. Follow with isopropyl alcohol only if it is compatible with the surface and adhesive system.
Allow the area to dry completely before applying adhesion promoter or installing the replacement strip. Adhesive applied over residue, moisture or loose material may not bond properly.
Inspect the wire opening and surrounding surface for damage or signs of moisture before proceeding.
Gently draw out enough wiring to make the new connections without straining the wires inside the cap.
Keep the supply wires accessible while cutting the old strip free. Preserve as much usable wire as possible, and identify positive and negative conductors before disconnecting them.
Do not force bulky existing connectors through a small opening or enlarge the opening simply to retrieve them.
Keystone’s replacement method uses staggered butt connections so the splices can pass back through the opening one at a time. Where sufficient wire is available, the demonstrated method offsets the connections by approximately two inches.
Plan both sides of the splice before cutting. If the wiring is too short, damaged or difficult to access, have a technician assess the repair.
Strip each wire to the length specified by the butt connector manufacturer. Avoid using a fixed stripping length for every connector, and take care not to cut conductor strands.
Match the replacement strip’s positive and negative leads to the identified supply wires. Use correctly sized connectors and the appropriate crimping tool.
Complete any required connector sealing according to its instructions, then check that each wire is securely retained.
Before attaching the strip:
If the strip does not illuminate, recheck the connections, polarity and power supply before continuing.
Once the light passes its test, gently return the connections into the cap opening without pulling them apart or pinching the wires.
Apply the approved adhesion promoter to the prepared mounting area as directed. Follow its drying time, temperature requirements and handling precautions.
Check alignment before removing the adhesive backing. Peel the backing progressively and press the strip firmly into position without stretching it.
Follow the replacement manufacturer’s instructions for application pressure and bonding time. Avoid touching the adhesive surface.
Apply compatible clear sealant to the strip ends and wire-entry opening as specified for the installation.
The goal is to close potential moisture-entry points without blocking any drainage features required by the light assembly.
Follow the sealant’s curing instructions before exposing the repair to rain or washing the RV. Adhesive bonding and sealant curing times may differ.
After the installation has set, restore power and check the full strip again. Confirm that the ends remain seated, the wiring is protected and the sealed opening has no visible gaps.
