To operate your RV’s slide-outs, prepare and level the RV according to its instructions, confirm adequate battery power, and clear the room’s travel path inside and outside. Then use the designated controls to extend or retract each room fully, following the procedure for that specific mechanism.
Different systems have different operating requirements. Learn which mechanisms your RV uses before your first campsite setup, and keep their instructions available for reference.
Common slide-out mechanisms include:
Electric motors or hydraulic equipment provide the driving force, depending on the design. These descriptions can overlap: “hydraulic” identifies the power method, while terms such as “rack-and-pinion” describe mechanical components.
Your RV may have more than one mechanism, so check each room’s documentation rather than assuming every slide operates identically.
Park on firm ground and complete the parking, wheel-chocking, and leveling steps specified in your Owner’s Manual before operating the slides.
Follow any required sequence for leveling equipment and slide-out movement. Stabilizer jacks should not be used to lift or level the RV unless they are specifically designed for that purpose.
Check for any required travel locks, braces, or restraints and remove them as directed before extending a room.
Check that the RV battery is charged, connected, and in good condition. Configure the battery disconnect as specified for slide-out operation.
Electric slide motors and electrically powered hydraulic pumps need an adequate power supply. Do not assume plugging into shore power compensates for a disconnected or weak battery.
If the room moves unusually slowly or the system stops, follow its troubleshooting instructions rather than repeatedly pressing the control.
Walk around the RV and check the full area the room will occupy. Allow clearance from trees, utility pedestals, vehicles, campground equipment, and other obstacles.
Inside, check for:
Keep children, pets, hands, and clothing away from moving components. If someone helps watch clearance, agree on a clear stop signal before starting.
Locate the correct switch or control-panel command for the room.
Operate it according to the mechanism manufacturer’s instructions. Follow any specified order for multiple rooms, and watch the slide throughout its movement.
The mechanism controls its travel speed; there is no need to try to regulate speed by repeatedly tapping the switch. Instructions for continuous movement and how long to hold the control at the end of travel vary by system.
Stop if the room catches, moves unevenly, or makes an unexpected grinding or scraping sound. Do not force it past an obstruction.
Once extended, check that the room reaches its intended position and the seals sit correctly.
Before bringing the room in, repeat the interior and exterior clearance checks.
Check accessible slide-roof surfaces and slide-topper fabric for debris, snow, ice, or pooled water. Follow the equipment instructions for safely clearing them; do not climb onto the slide-out roof.
Secure furniture, close interfering drawers and cabinet doors, and move loose belongings out of the travel path.
Retract each room using its specified procedure and operating sequence.
Afterward, walk around the RV to confirm that every slide is fully retracted and seated as intended. Check inside for trapped items or unusual gaps, and reinstall travel restraints where required.
Never travel with a slide partially extended.
If a slide stops or becomes misaligned, use its troubleshooting guide. Manual overrides differ and may require specific tools or procedures; do not assume a generic crank will work.
Follow the maintenance schedule for your mechanism. Apply lubricants only where the manufacturer specifies them, using the approved product.
Monitor weather conditions and follow equipment guidance for wind, snow, and ice. Avoid operating a room that is frozen in place or obstructed.
