How to De-Winterize Your RV: A Step-by-Step Guide

Keystone RV Master Technicians Matt and Bart explain how to de-winterize your RV, ensuring it’s ready for the RV season. This guide covers essential steps, including airing out your RV, preparing the water system, and checking appliances, using the Hideout 32LBH as an example. Step 1: Air Out Your RV

• Open Windows and Vents
  Start by opening all windows, vents, and any exterior compartment doors to air out the RV.

Step 2: Prepare the Water System

1. Low Point Drains
   Open the low point drains until the water runs clear, then close them.
2. Exterior Shower
   Run the exterior shower, starting with cold water and then hot, until the water runs clear.
3. Faucets
   Open each faucet one at a time (including kitchen, bathroom, toilet, shower faucet, and showerhead) until the water runs clear and no air is sputtering out.

Step 3: Prepare the Water Heater

1. Anode Rod or Tank Plug
   Insert the anode rod or tank plug first.
2. Water Heater Bypass
   Locate the water heater bypass and turn it off to allow the tank to fill.
3. Purging Air
   Go to the kitchen sink faucet and turn on the hot water to purge air out of the tank. Repeat for all hot water faucets, including baths, exterior showers, and camp kitchens.
4. Check for Leaks
   Once lines are flushed and the water heater tank is full, turn on the propane and water heater. Check for any unexpected leaks around visible water lines.

Important Note: If the water heater pressure relief valve weeps, it’s normal; it indicates the air gap has diminished.

Step 4: Restore the Air Gap in Your Water Heater

1. Safety First
   Turn off the water heater, water supply, and water pump. Allow the water in the tank to cool down to prevent burns.
2. Relief Valve
   Lift the water heater relief valve to let excess water out until no water runs through it. Release the lever to restore the air gap.

Step 5: Test Appliances

Once the fresh water system is de-winterized, test and operate all appliances to ensure they are in working order. Check safety equipment for proper function. For more information, watch our Safety Devices video or refer to your Owner’s Manual.

Step 6: Prepare the Black and Gray Tanks

• Fill the black and gray tanks with water and the appropriate amount of deodorant. Leave some water in the toilet to cover the seal.

Step 7: Final Preparations

• Wipe Down
  Wipe down all surfaces, and load up your equipment, clothing, bedding, kitchen items, and anything else you need for your adventures.
• Sweep and Inspect
  Sweep out the RV and check its overall condition. This is a great time for a little TLC before the season begins.
